About Columbia County:  Columbia County was first organized in 1846, but long before Wisconsin history began, Columbia County was an important place to the people of early times. It is unknown how many hundreds of years ago Indians began using the Fox-Wisconsin waterway, carrying their canoes across the narrow portage between these rivers. It is known that in 1673, two Miami Indians guided French explorers, Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette to this portage. Columbia County has also been notable for honoring and respecting its women, the most famous of whom was the Pulitzer Prize winning author, Zona Gale. Columbia County is located in south-central Wisconsin and has a total land area of approximately 778 square miles. Columbia County's population is approximately 53,862. The county seat is Portage. Columbia County is comprised of 21 townships, 10 villages and 4 cities.
